Types of Tests and Differences

Antigen Tests:

Designed to detect specific proteins, known as antigens, which are found on the surface of a virus. These tests are particularly useful and commonly utilized when a person is displaying symptoms of a viral infection. They provide quick results, typically within minutes, allowing for timely decision-making regarding treatment and isolation.

PCR Tests:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, are often referred to as the "gold standard" for viral detection. This is due to their high sensitivity and accuracy. PCR tests work by amplifying small amounts of a virus's genetic material—its RNA or DNA—until it’s detectable. These tests are crucial in accurately diagnosing viral infections, even when an individual has low levels of the virus or is asymptomatic.

Timing for Testing:

Flu:

Testing should take place within 2 days of symptom onset.

COVID-19:

Testing can occur between 2 and 5 days after symptom onset.

Test Results:

Results are available within 1 to 2 hours.
